Issues concerning the quality of air, water, soil, trees and other environmental and ecological attributes are at the top of the agenda in almost all discussions of our transforming society. However, the economic linkages that these issues deserve are not coming together owing both to India's economic position and individual commitment. If only intent and the content of policy are taken into account, India's environment should have been on a par with the rest of the developed world as legislations are comparable.
