Elementary, but only 54 pc schools have them

DHNS: The State government has identified eight basic facilities elementary and high schools must have.

At the elementary school level, playgrounds rank the lowest, with only 54.42 per cent having them. The second worst facility is, ironically, the compound wall, which only 66.6 per cent schools have. The drastically low figures are, however, better than the previous years’. Mumbai-born engineer plans to make steel out of waste

Mumbai : Even as we grapple with the growing problem of waste management, a city girl’s homecoming is marked with an innovative patented technology that uses rubber and plastic to make steel. Meet Dr Veena Sahajwalla, director of Sustainable Materials Research and Technology at the University of New South Wales, whose enthusiasm about science is simply infectious.

“I love engineering, and I have always been this problem-solving person,” she says as she reminisces her childhood days in Mumbai. At a time when girls studying science mostly opted for medicine, Dr Sahajwalla opted for engineering to become the only woman engineer in her IIT-Kanpur batch in 1980s. Her focus on sustainable materials has its roots in her childhood interest in little glass medicine bottles. “Women would collect these bottles to exchange them at the scrap guy, as there is a value attached to them. And I realised then that if I wanted to pick up rubbish and figure out a way to do something with it, I was different,” she says. Read more

'25% elderly population depressed'

NEW DELHI: One in every four among India's elderly population is depressed, and one in three suffers from arthritis, while one in five cannot hear.

Three RIRT students lauded for a model

BHOPAL: Three students of a city-based engineering college have developed a model, which they claim, works better compared to existing technique used in cleaning oil spillage in sea. The model, VYT Umbrella', the only entry from the state in annual technocrat model exhibition at the IIT-Roorkee, came in for praise from experts from both India and abroad.

A team of three students -- Vipul Sharma, Yousuf Ali and Tojo Thomas of the Radharaman Institute of Research and Technology (RIRT)-came together to make an economical model. "Scientists and professors from European nations appreciated our work. They took our cell numbers and e-mail IDs to contact in the future," a team member said. Incidentally, the model called VYT, takes its name from first alphabet of name of each of 3 team members. About the project, Yousuf says oil spills have been a going concern for environmentalists across the world. Several techniques have been developed to save sea water and marine life from oil spillage. Less Than Half of India’s Kids Can Read at Grade 2 Level

Two years after the Indian government passed the Right To Education Act, only 48 percent of all Indian school children can read at second grade levels, concluded the Annual Status of Education Report, released Jan. 16 by the non-profit organization Pratham.

India’s schoolchildren are receiving a poor quality of education, says Pratham.

Reading scores have declined across the country by five percent from the previous year. And alarmingly, only 30 percent of children in third grade and two-thirds of fifth graders can solve a simple two digit problem, a decline of six percent from the previous year. Read more

If political parties do give free laptops to high school students if elected to power, it could be a major game-changer in education. The digital divide between urban and rural areas as well as social groups would narrow. E-learning would also expand, improving the overall quality of education. It might seem surprising that regional outfits in UP, Punjab and, earlier, Tamil Nadu have been the prime movers of this innovative idea. But that's possibly because they have a better idea of the fast-changing aspirations of the electorate in the era of globalisation.

Some may argue that the AIADMK's assembly poll success on similar promises last year pushed other political groups to follow this trend. What's wrong in that? Improper urban planning in Northeast

Kohima : Airing concern over the improper urban planning in the north eastern states, the need to adopt a comprehensive strategy and road map for securing a holistic development and reformation of urban areas has been stressed here today at the regional workshop on “Urban Governance, Management and Municipal Finance” for the north eastern states.

Chief Secretary Lalthara told the workshop that the vulnerability of earthquake is very high in North East. Overall student performance dips in Gujarat, Bengal: Study

India’s school education success story has a big bloomer -- overall student aptitude has fallen in four states, Gujarat, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Tripura.

Schools to be inspected for RTE compliance in Panchkula

PANCHKULA: Schools will soon be inspected to verify compliance of parameters provided under the Right to Education, said Jagat Singh, representative of the education department, to the court on Saturday.

The officer said a meeting was held with all the school heads on February 1, 2012, regarding the inspection of schools under Rule 15(3) of the RTE Act. The principals have been asked to inform the district education officer (DEO) after fixing a date with the concerned sarpanch or the ward municipal councillor for inspection of the respective school. MCI to extend MBBS course by one year

New Delhi : The Medical Council of India is set to extend the duration of the MBBS course by a year. One year’s rural postings for doctors has also been made compulsory by the ministry. The MBBS course will now be for six-and-a-half instead of five-and-a-half years.

The proposal to extend the duration of the MBBS course by a year and a year of compulsory rural posting was unanimously approved in a meeting held on Saturday by Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. The MCI has been asked to work on the issue as this will require an amendment in the regulation “The Minimum Standard Requirement, 1999”. Speaking to this newspaper, a senior health ministry official said: “Under the regulation the duration of internship is for one year, which includes three months’ posting in rural areas and nine months in a hospital attached to a medical college.” Read more

Corporation pulled up for flaws in Chennai schools

CHENNAI : Finding several shortcomings in safety and infrastructure aspects in Chennai Schools, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has charged the Chennai Corporation with flouting norms, thereby failing to ensure the safety of the schoolchildren.

The CAG report tabled in the Assembly (for the year ending March 2010), in its performance review of 281 schools run by the Chennai Corporation between 2005-09, has revealed that none of the schools had obtained licence from competent authority for buildings under the Tamil Nadu Public Buildings (Licensing) Act, 1965, which stipulates that public buildings like schools should be used only under a valid licence for structural stability. The government's argument that they were government buildings and so exempted from such licence was not tenable as the Act clearly stipulates the schools, frequented by public, had to be certified by competent authority, the CAG report said. Experts skeptical about new education body

BANGALORE: With tremendous changes expected in the country’s higher education scenario, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has proposed the setting up of an autonomous Centre for Policy Research in Higher Education (CPRHE), which is supposed to frame policies for planning and development of higher education. While the proposed CPRHE has been given paramount responsibility, senior academicians have expressed concerns over such ‘isolated’ efforts in policy research.

Former Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor N R Shetty told Express,“I have reservations about this move. It is okay to have policy research. However, it has to be supplemented by actual work. Everyone is talking about Gross Enrolment Ratio, equity and quality in education. What can mere policies and statistics do without the government working on these immediate requirements?” Read more

Urdu will be 2nd language in West Bengal

The state Cabinet on Friday has approved a proposal regarding the declaration of Urdu as the second language in areas where 10 per cent of the total population speak in Urdu and has also given the in principle nod to set up West Bengal Highway Development Corporation for the improvement and maintenance of the state highways and their connecting thoroughfares.

The Cabinet has also decided to include Joka I and Joka II under Kolkata Municipal Corporation and approved another proposal of relinquish the state government’s share of East West Metro Project, which would now be executed by the Indian Railways. Read more

PMPML training for BRT bus drivers begins

PUNE: The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has started training sessions for its drivers who will be operating buses plying on the proposed BRT route between Nigdi and Dapodi. Bus stations on the BRT route will be located on the right side of the road, and buses which will ply on the route will have doors opening on the right as well as on the left side.

BCI has threatened to round up lawyers and protest against the intent of the Union government to take away key functions from it in the name of introducing more efficient regulation of the legal sector. Home ministry plans school to train spies, cops

NEW DELHI: As part of the Centre's attempt to strengthen security infrastructure and equip personnel with sophisticated gear, the home ministry has approved several proposals for paramilitary forces, ranging from setting up a 'detective training school' to procuring huge numbers of high-tech 'radio sets'. It also plans to buy and wet-lease helicopters for internal security duties. 

A school to train spies - Central Detective Training School (CDTS) - will be set up in Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh by the home ministry's Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D). "The ministry has already released Rs 2.18 crore to BPR&D for acquisition of 8.37 acres of land for establishment of the school," a senior official said. Read more

Poor data entry: Doctors told to tidy up in Bangalore

Bangalore : Studies showing alarming rate of deaths due to heart attacks are not accurate. This is because the doctors might have failed to diagnose the correct cause of death. In view of this, the office of the chief registrar of births and deaths and directorate of economics & statistics (DES) has organised a training workshop on cause of death medical certification.

Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal’s proposal to establish a National Textbook Council deserves to be spiked immediately because it is a thinly-disguised attempt to impose the will of the Congress on what schools across the country should teach their students. The proposed council is ostensibly supposed to monitor the content of textbooks used by schools that do not follow the syllabus prescribed by the Central Board of Secondary Education to ensure that the curricula does not have material which is ‘insidious’ in nature, but that reasoning is only a ruse for the ‘Congressisation’ of education in the country. The State Governments are, after all, well-equipped with their own education departments to monitor content and take action. Where is the need for a central authority to begin policing the syllabus? Girls more anaemic than boys, finds GU

A medical check-up of the first year boys and girls in 68 colleges under Gujarat University (GU) in urban centres and 28 others in rural areas of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar districts has found that girls are more anaemic and underweight than boys. It was revealed after a survey by the varsity.

The GU has carried out the check-up of 27,222 students, including 18,805 from college in urban areas and 8,470 students from rural areas, a press release said. Read more

Mangalore university centre in Udupi soon, says Acharya

Udupi : Higher Education Minister Dr V S Acharya said that measures have been taken to set up a sub centre of Mangalore University in Udupi district.

Speaking after inaugurating the newly constructed building of Post Graduate study centre and extension structure of the college at Tenkaneediyur First Grade College here on Friday, he said the sub centres of Mangalore University are already set up at Madikeri and Mangalore. The government is spending never like before on educational sector. He informed that there is demand for as many as 700 faculties in various colleges across Karnataka. However, at present, the revenue department has approved the recruitment of as many as 250 staffs. Until the vacancies are filled, the shortage of teachers will be substituted by guest lectures. There are nearly as many as 6,000 to 7,000 guest faculties performing the job without any sort of distractions to the teaching process, he added. Read more

GU students need to save their skin: Health report

Ahmedabad : Shocking as it may sound, nearly 8.44% of the first year students at the Gujarat University suffer from skin disease. Of the around 2,299 students examined by the doctors hired by GU in its affiliated colleges in the urban as well as rural parts, 1,811 students in urban and 488 in rural parts suffer from skin diseases.

The health check-up of around 27,222 students in GU-affiliated colleges screened them for 17 types of diseases. The check-up revealed that 6.78% students in urban areas are under-weight and 7.31% are obese. According to the check up, of the total 1,847 students, 1,509 are under-weight in urban areas. Similarly, of the total 1991 examined students, around 1,788 were found to be obese in urban area. Read more
